The 25th Annual Capitol 10,000 Sunday,
April 7, 2002
The Capitol 10K run is as Austin as Eyore's
Birthday Party and the Spam-O-Rama. Loyal volunteers (in blue
t-shirts) serve up water to the runners, many of whom are all-serious
about the finishing and don't slow down for the proffered refreshment
(see first-place runner in the first photo). Others, however,
are happy to drink on the run, while the more leisurely runners
are more serious about the fun of the event and are willing takers
of the water and repartee. Neither the windy, rainy weather nor
the Spring Forward time change deterred the runners or the volunteers.
Why do the volunteers do it? The after-run volunteer party (last
photo) may have something to do with it, but I'm sure that's
not the whole story. Why do the runners do it? Because it's there.
